The World.Report Award aims at a new form of social commitment through photography.

The award is open to both professional and amateur photographers from all over the world.

The award will give attention to works focusing on people and their social or cultural stories; public or private, minor or crucial, major human tragedies or smaller daily life stories, changes and immutability.

Every year the contest creates a fresco that tells the stories of our Planet, its great changes and its intimate and personal relationships connecting human beings.

The World Report Award|Documenting Humanity isn’t simply a contest that through its prizes economically supports those who are actively engaged in this difficult sector of photography, but it also represents a way for all participants to enter into a supportive community we have built over the past 10 years and composed of professionals who are already collaborating with our organization.

About Festival of Ethical Photography

The Festival of Ethical Photography was born in 2010 with the intention of focusing on ethical content of great relevance, bringing the general public closer to social issues. We believe photography is, and has been, a vital tool in communicating the reality of social injustice around the world and we want to emphasize the relationship between ethics, communication and photography through an innovative and diverse festival. Thanks to a rich program of exhibitions by international and award-winning photojournalists, there are meetings, workshops, portfolio reviews, video-projections, educational projects for students and numerous other events.

Other than the annual event taking place every fall, the organization of the Festival works daily to make sure that the photographers’ work is seen and their voices heard.

Judging criteria

The jury’s assessment is based on the photographer’s ability to build a narrative and emotional story through a series of compelling images.

Reportages can either be in color or black & white, and should form a focused and meaningful story.

The award will give attention to works focusing on people and their social or cultural stories; public or private, minor or crucial, major human tragedies or smaller daily life stories, changes and immutability.

PLEASE NOTE:

The award has not a specific theme other than in the FUTURE GENERATIONS section (reportage category) and in the SINGLE SHOT category (for more info on the themes see Categories guidelines below)

Lauren Steel is a Visuals Consultant for photographers, brands, media, agencies, foundations and nonprofits to craft authentic visual narratives. She co-founded The Visual Thinking Collective and is currently a contract photo editor with The New York Times. Previously she worked at Getty Images for 15 years and co-founded a subsidiary of the company, The Verbatim Agency. Lauren was a part of the rebranding and start of Getty Images Reportage where she also started the Emerging Talent program.

Svetlana Bachevanova is the executive director of the FotoEvidence Foundation. She is a Bulgarian American photojournalist and a co-founder of FotoEvidence. The books she and her team publish expose injustice, create enduring evidence of violations of human rights and inspire social change. Svetlana has worked with some of the most skilled and dedicated documentary photographers to publish their work, human stories recounting indisputable evidence of social injustice.

Gary Knight is an award-winning photographer and a co-founder and director of the VII Photo Agency. He is also the co-director of the VII Foundation and director and founder of the VII Academy. Gary is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Frontline Club, London; co-founder of The GroundTruth Project, Boston; founding director of the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University; twice chair and president of the World Press Photo Award; was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2009; and a Logan Non Fiction Fellow at the Carey Institute in 2017.

Alberto Prina founded the photo association Gruppo Fotografico Progetto Immagine and has co-ordinated its annual Festival of Ethical Photography since he created it. Alberto is a curator of exhibits, a jury member at international contests and he is the creator of the Travelling Festival. He works as a reportage photographer for non-profit organisations developing projects in the field of photographic communication, multimedia and collaborative photography.

His passion for photography started in 2004. Since the very beginning, his interest has focused on social reportage photography. After having attended several photography courses in 2007 Aldo Mendichi started a documentary project about the Northern Ireland question, “The Troubles”. Since 2010, he has been one of the coordinators of the Festival of Ethical Photography together with Alberto Prina and he is also a member of the editorial staff of Ludesan Life, an online reportage magazine

Master Award

This section is open to all photographers, with no restrictions of any kind.
Reportages must consist of 20 images minimum and 30 images maximum.

1° classified

• The prize will be 3,000 Euros, before taxes

• Printing of the exhibit

2° classified

The awarded photographers of the Master Section will be required to gather with the finalists of the Spotlight section in an in-depth 3 hour online session. This program called “The Spotlight photographers meet the Masters” is aimed to encourage cultural exchange and dialogue among photographers, sharing experiences and competencies

Spotlight Award

This section is open to all photographers who have never received one of the following awards before April 1st, 2021: World Press Photo, W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, Pulitzer Prize, POYi Picture of the Year and World.Report Award, with exception of the multimedia category. Mentions are not considered as awards, so it will still be possible to participate in the category.
Reportages must consist of 20 images minimum and 30 images maximum.

1° classified

• The prize will be 2,000 Euros, before taxes

THE SPOTLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER MEET THE MASTERS

Exclusive online meetings dedicated to the first 15 classified photographers of this section.

The first 3 classified photographers of the Master Award section are going to gather with the finalists of the Spotlight section in an in-depth 3 hour session. The meeting will be structured in a way that encourages cultural exchange and dialogue among photographers, sharing experiences and competencies in a very high level international context.

The creation of a professional network of excellence has always been the spirit that inspired our projects with the aim to enrich the photography community.

FUTURE GENERATIONS AWARD (themed section)

This category is open to all photographers with no restrictions of any kind.
Reportages must consist of 20 images minimum and 30 images maximum.

1° classified

Theme of the Future Generations Award

We ask photographers to tell us about the world of childhood and adolescence in all its aspects: the unsolved problems, the feeling of abandonment, the joys, the lightheartedness and the loss of innocence that being children and young teenagers implies. The difficulties, the inequalities, the isolation, and finally, the pandemic.

The energy of an entire generation that represents our future and the world that surrounds it and through which it must face both struggles and dreams. A great planetary tale that gives voice to those who are becoming the very future of the planet.

2 - SHORT STORY AWARD

This category is open to all photographers, with no restrictions of any kind.
Reportages must consist of 5 images minimum and 10 images maximum.

1° classified

• The prize will be 1,500 Euros, before taxes
• Printing of the exhibit
• The organization will cover travel and accommodation expenses to travel to Lodi, Italy in the month of October to present the project

3 - STUDENT AWARD

This category is open to students currently enrolled in a school of photography or who graduated from a school of photography after January 1st, 2020.
Reportages must consist of 20 images minimum and 30 images maximum.

1° classified

• The prize will be a FUJIFILM X-T4 mirrorless camera with a XF18-55mm lens
• Printing of the exhibit
• The organization will cover travel and accommodation expenses to travel to Lodi, Italy in the month of October to present the project

4 - SINGLE SHOT

This category is open to all photographers with no restrictions of any kind. Every photographer can submit as many works as one likes.

1° classified

• A single shot will be awarded. The prize for first classified will be 500 Euros, before taxes
• The organization will cover travel and accommodation expenses to travel to Lodi, Italy in the month of October to present the project

30 finalists

• The top 30 finalists of the Single Shot category section will have their photos exhibited during the 2021 edition of the Festival

Theme of the Single Shot Award

Giving attention to values, giving attention to hope.

In a single shot, we are looking for a positive message of hope and progress.

We are looking for the world’s beauty, justice and solidarity, sustainability and respect for the environment, scientific research and technological progress.

A collection of images that create a story which convey those principles that every single human being, and community consider essential for the future of the next generations. Thirty glances from thirty photographers.

In a complex and difficult situation like the one we are experiencing, we would like to find photographs that represent a source of inspiration for a better planet and a renewed humanity.
