About "When I becomes we..."

Picter and Der Greif have partnered up for a special call for images to encourage and display global solidarity and community in times of COVID-19. Inspired by Alessia Glaviano's daily Instagram posts, sharing visual impressions of Italy's humanitarian situation, we have gathered a group of influential practitioners and organisations in contemporary visual culture.

In times of uncertainty and crisis it is of utmost importance to show solidarity and compassion with one another, while ensuring each and everyone's personal safety. We are amidst an unfolding global crisis, and despite the disastrous consequences in terms of casualties and economic decline, this crisis is already unveiling two fundamental things:

  • we are all equal as humans and

  • we're all in this together

What we need right now is a global understanding of the situation's serenity, willingness to sacrifice, compassion and solidarity by behaving correctly. Act as if you were infected, reduce social interaction to keep the most vulnerable people in our society safe -- including the ones who are working tirelessly to help them: Our doctors, nurses as well as cashiers in our supermarkets.

Image makers all across the globe have the power and creativity to visualize this important message -- with intelligence, humour and compassion. Submit images that you have either taken recently or re-edited images from your archive that illustrate:

When "i" becomes "we" even illness becomes wellness (Malcolm X)

A selection of the submitted projects will be shown on Der Greif, Vogue.it and on the Picter blog.

Important note:

Photo Vogue Festival has announced the theme of its open call: "All in this together". As part of our partnership, images submitted to the call for entries will also be considered to be selected for the festival in November in Milan.

Due to the special circumstances of this open call, images submitted until Wednesday, March 25, 23.59 CET, will be considered to be selected for a portfolio section in the April issue of Vogue Italia, portraying the experience of quarantine around the world.
