WARS Photography Award aspires to support photojournalists from around the world. The award is for professionals engaged in hostile environments working to offer important information on conflicts and their consequences on the community. The association “46 Parallelo” and Montura, sponsor of the award, together with Intersos NGO, is launching the first edition of WARS.
After the judging process, the winner photographer and the names of the two finalists will be published on the website www.atlanteguerre.it on the first week of September. The first place winner will receive a cash prize of 4.000€ through a money transfer from the association “46 Parallelo” within sixty (60) days from the announcement.
The three finalists will receive five (5) copies of the “Atlas of Wars and Conflicts" and the selected photos will be exposed in a traveling exhibition. The finalists will receive a reimbursement of expenses for travel costs, up to a maximum of 300€ per person (prior receipts presentation).
WARS exhibition will be hosted in Trento during the presentation ceremony of the new edition of the “Atlas of Wars and Conflicts”, in Ferrara during the “Internazionale Festival” and in Naples during the “International Festival of Cinema for Human Rights”.
The only category admitted is the photo-reportage. Reportage means a series of images, from 10 to 15 photographs, on the same subject, taken in at least one of this countries: Countries concerned are: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Western Sahara, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Colombia, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Afghanistan, China/Tibet, Philippines, India, Iraq, Kashmir, Kurdistan/Turkey, Pakistan, Thailand, Yemen, Burma, Korea North/South, Iran, Kirghizstan, Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Chechnya, Cyprus, Georgia, Kosovo, Nagorno-Karabakh, Basque Country, Ukraine. At the discretion of the Jury, photos from areas different from the above might be accepted.
At least five photographs of the reportage must have been shot after 1st May 2018. The rest of the images might date back to previous years. The stories can be published or unpublished.
Carol Guzy, photojournalist
Carol Guzy is the only journalist to ever receive a fourth Pulitzer for coverage of the Haitian earthquake in 2010. Previously she was honored twice with the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for her coverage of the military intervention in Haiti and the devastating mudslide in Armero, Colombia. She has received a third Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for her work in Kosovo. She has been named Photographer of the Year for the National Press Photographers Association three times and eight times for the White House News Photographers Association and has earned many other prestigious awards in her chosen profession of photojournalism. She specializes on long-form documentary human interest projects, news and feature stories, both domestic and international and is currently a contract photographer with Zuma Press.
Manoocher Deghati, photojournalist and editor
Manoocher Deghati has been photographing news, conflicts and social issues around the globe since 1978, starting with the Iranian revolution and subsequent war with Iraq in his native country Iran. After being exiled from Iran in 1985 he worked for several major agencies, magazines, and the United Nations on four continents. He worked for publications such as: Time, Life, Newsweek, GEO, and National Geographic. In 2002 he founded AINA Photojournalism Institute in Kabul. After directing the photo operation for The Associated Press in the Middle East for four years, he is now freelancing from his new home base in Southern Italy.
Alessio Romenzi, photojournalist
Alessio Romenzi has been extensively covering the Arab Spring wars and revolutions since the beginning, with a special focus on Egypt, Libya and Syria. Lately he focused on migration crisis and the conflict related to ISIS. His images has appeared on major international newspapers and magazines including Time Magazine, Newsweek, New York Times, Le Monde, El Pais, La Repubblica. Romenzi won, among other prizes and citations, the World Press Photo and the UNICEF Picture of the Year.

WARS - War and Revolutionary Stories – is a free photography contest open to all professional photo-journalists of age from any country of origin. The award is focused on current conflicts around the world looking at both the causes and consequences of war, including topics such as victims, refugees, humanitarian and environmental disasters, unequal wealth distribution and lack of Human Rights. Countries concerned are: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Western Sahara, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Colombia, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Afghanistan, China/Tibet, Philippines, India, Iraq, Kashmir, Kurdistan/Turkey, Pakistan, Thailand, Yemen, Burma, Korea North/South, Iran, Kirghizstan, Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Chechnya, Cyprus, Georgia, Kosovo, Nagorno-Karabakh, Basque Country, Ukraine. At the discretion of the Jury, photos from areas different from the above might be accepted.
The submitted photos must be true representation of reality and should not be posed or set up. Portraits are excepted but it must be clearly stated in the captions of the photo (IPTC). Photographs must be submitted through Picter from May 23, 2019 and no later than July 10, 2019.
Admitted photos might be digital or analogic (scanned and saved as in art. 3). Basic post production is allowed, but the meaning must not be by any means altered through digital post production softwares. Photographs can be in color or black and white. Files altered to sepia tones are not accepted.
Any subjects and objects cannot be added/removed from the images. Photos must not be distorted and only single exposures are allowed. Photomontages are not accepted.
In case of doubts about the veracity of the images, the award direction might ask the candidate for the original files (RAW), which, if not submitted within 4 days from the formal request, can disqualify the candidate from the contest.

The photos must be saved in .jpg at least 3000px (long side). Each photo cannot exceed 5MB in size. We suggest using color profile Adobe RGB for color pictures and grayscale Gamma 2.2 for black and white.
Photographs must not show the photographer’s name, agency, publication and other kind of information: captions must be included in the metadata (IPTC) of the images. Each image must be presented with detailed journalistic information in English, answering to the Five Ws (Who? What? When? Where? Why?). Five Ws are the questions whose answers are considered the basic information to complete the photo.
The Jury is composed by three committed photojournalists who spent the last decades in covering wars and their impact on the civilian population. Carol Guzy, an American photojournalist recognized with the Robert Capa Gold Medal and four times Pulitzer prize winner, Manoocher Deghati, Iranian photojournalist and editor winner of the Pulitzer prize with Associated Press and Alessio Romenzi, an Italian photojournalist recipient of World Press Photo. The WARS Award direction will judge the competitor’s admission criteria and the neutrality of the jury. All application will be examined and valued equally by the jury.

The photographer must be the author and the copyright owner of the submitted images. The photographers will always maintain the ownership of the copyright of the submitted photos. The three finalists guarantee the nonexclusive right of use of the images to the association “46 Parallelo” for the communication on all medias, including social media, online and paper and the traveling exhibits, the “Atlas of Wars and Conflicts” and all promotional activities without any remuneration.
Association “46 Parallelo” always guarantees to quote the author of the photographs, committing not to give others the right of use of the images outside the contexts and publications named above.
The finalists of WARS award commit themselves to provide to association “46 Parallelo” high quality images, by no later than the second week of September 2019, in order to allow large format prints for the traveling exhibit.
The association 46°Parallelo was born in Trento in 2008, founded by a group of journalists and reporters engaged in documenting conflict zones. In the last decade the Association has been involved in several projects in school, universities and museum including talks, photography exhibitions, film and documentaries. 46° Parallelo is the editor of the annual publication The Atlas of Wars and Conflict, a map of conflicts around the world, in collaboration with Amnesty International, UNHCR and MSF.
