GFI | Premio Luigi Ghirri è una open call promossa dal Comune di Reggio Emilia, rivolta ad artiste e artisti under 35 - cittadine/i italiane/i oppure straniere/i attualmente residenti in Italia - che utilizzano la fotografia come medium. Il format prevede la selezione di 7 proposte che confluiranno in una mostra collettiva nell’ambito di Fotografia Europea 2022. I candidati dovranno presentare un progetto (preferibilmente recente e non già esposto altrove nella medesima forma) aderente al tema proposto e costituito da una serie di immagini con una descrizione e una proposta di allestimento. La forma e la modalità espositive saranno definite in accordo tra l’artista e i curatori.

Ogni artista o collettivo può candidare soltanto un progetto. Non possono partecipare le artiste e gli artisti che siano già stati selezionati in una delle ultime tre edizioni del bando (ed. 2018, 2019, 2021).

IL TEMA : POSSIBILE

“Possibile è ciò che il mondo non ha ancora espresso ma potrebbe esprimere in qualsiasi momento. ... Il reale è fatto anche di ciò che non c’è ma potrebbe esserci, ciò che è invisibile non è meno esistente del visibile”. Nel suo ultimo saggio Leonardo Caffo intravede nell’“essere giovani” quello stato che permette di non farsi ingabbiare dalle regole e dalle convenzioni, di saper vedere sé stessi e il mondo circostante fuori dei ruoli già assegnati e dai destini già scritti. Ed è una condizione che va oltre la soglia anagrafica: da Pascoli, fino a Ghirri e Wenders, è la capacità di vedere le cose non imparandone la definizione già data, ma immaginandone le infinite potenzialità. Le recenti trasformazioni del medium fotografico offrono sempre più possibilità per trovare nuovi modi di affrontare tematiche e argomenti complessi. Continui spostamenti di campo che permettono di dare spazio a tutte quelle immagini latenti in grado di tracciare un’altra narrazione, raccontare un’altra storia. Giorgio Parisi, recentemente insignito del Premio Nobel per la fisica, ci insegna come siano proprio gli elementi differenti, che eccedono, che non si conformano, quelli da cui partire per provare a descrivere i sistemi complessi in cui ci troviamo tutti noi oggi ad abitare.

IL PREMIO

Fee di 1500 euro alle/ai 7 finaliste/i selezionate/i di GFI, per la copertura di:

• produzione e trasporto delle opere;
• trasferte personali e permanenza a Reggio Emilia durante gli allestimenti e le giornate inaugurali;
• eventuale assicurazione a copertura del trasporto delle opere.

Premio Luigi Ghirri del valore di 4.000 euro, assegnato a uno dei finalisti da una giuria internazionale con al suo interno un rappresentante della famiglia Ghirri e presieduta dalla direzione artistica di Fotografia Europea. Giunto alla sua quarta edizione, il premio di Giovane Fotografia Italiana nel 2022 è dedicato a Luigi Ghirri.

COME CANDIDARSI

La candidatura è gratuita. Per partecipare:

1. creare un account da fotografo sulla piattaforma Picter https://www.picter.com/;

2. Nella pagina dei contest per creatori selezionare Giovane Fotografia Italiana per registrarsi e procedere con l’inserimento dei dati e la descrizione del progetto.

3. Caricare i materiali richiesti che includeranno:

• selezione di immagini (minimo 5 - massimo 15, 1500 px lato lungo );
• descrizione del progetto in italiano ed inglese;
• curriculum vitae;
• una breve biografia (massimo 1500 caratteri);
• liberatorie compilate (in italiano o in inglese) e firmate dai soggetti ritratti in maniera riconoscibile;
• sketchwork e/o descrizione di una proposta di allestimento

Non saranno valide le candidature che risultino incomplete. L’upload del materiale sarà modificabile fino alla data di chiusura del bando.

I CRITERI DI GIUDIZIO

GFI sostiene il lavoro di artisti che utilizzano il medium fotografico come riflessione sul suo ruolo nell’odierna cultura visiva e sui temi del mondo contemporaneo. Sono accettate serie di fotografie o progetti in cui la fotografia si affianca ad altri media, mantenendo un ruolo preminente. La giuria valuta la qualità complessiva dei lavori, considerando il ruolo che rivestono le immagini nella loro relazione con il concept del progetto, oltre alla formalizzazione di una proposta di display espositivo.

1. Qual è il limite di età per le artiste e gli artisti che vogliono partecipare?

Possono partecipare al bando tutti coloro che non hanno ancora compiuto il 36° anno di età prima della chiusura dei termini di iscrizione.

2. La/ lo stessa/o artista può candidarsi contemporaneamente a Giovane Fotografia Italiana ed al bando di Fotografia Europea?

Tra i requisiti in bando è espressa la possibilità di partecipare a GFI con il medesimo progetto presentato alla Open Call di Fotografia Europea. Qualora il progetto venisse selezionato da entrambe le giurie, l'artista sarà chiamata/o a scegliere a quale iniziativa aderire entro il 12 gennaio 2022.

3. Le artiste e gli artisti italiani che partecipano devono risiedere in italia?

La residenza in Italia è richiesta solo agli artisti stranieri.

4. A quali immagini è necessario allegare la liberatoria ?

La liberatoria va compilata solo in presenza di soggetti riconoscibili. Per ogni soggetto è richiesta una liberatoria a sé, compilata e firmata dal soggetto ritratto. Le immagini scattate in occasione di manifestazioni o eventi (con più soggetti ritratti) possono essere presentate senza liberatoria, gli scatti ritraenti un soggetto singolo devono essere invece muniti dalla liberatoria.

Curatrice

Ilaria Campioli è curatrice della sezione di fotografia di Palazzo dei Musei a Reggio Emilia. Ha lavorato per il Museo del Louvre, per la Collezione Maramotti e per il festival Fotografia Europea per cui ha curato diversi progetti, alcuni dei quali dedicati ai libri fotografici. Ha collaborato con Joan Fontcuberta, Erik Kessels e Sarah Moon seguendone in particolare la produzione editoriale. Dal 2018 è curatrice del premio Giovane Fotografia Italiana. Lo scorso settembre ha curato la mostra "Luigi Ghirri. The Marazzi Years" ospitata a Palazzo Ducale di Sassuolo.

Krzysztof Candrowicz

Co-founder and member of the Foundation of Visual Education and Lodz Fotofestiwal in Poland. In 2013 he became artistic director of the Triennial of Photography in Hamburg in Germany and since 2018 works as a curator for CICLO Biennial in Porto, Portugal. Krzysztof works internationally as a guest curator and visiting lecturer in numerous organizations, museums, schools, festivals and as a jury member of various projects and art prizes, including the Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Award, Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, Hasselblad Award, Robert Capa Award and many others.

About

Premio Luigi Ghirri per Giovane Fotografia Italiana (Luigi Ghirri Award for Young Italian Photography) is a free-of-charge Open Call for artists under the age of 35, promoting the discovery and showcase of emerging photography talents in Italy. An international commission selects the works that, receiving a financial reward, are produced and shown in a collective exhibition in the European Photography program in Reggio Emilia. Artists are invited to submit a project (preferably a recent one and not previously exposed or published in the same format) in line with the yearly chosen concept.The project should include a series of images with a description and a setup proposal. The exhibition layout will be defined together by artists and curators.

To be considered for the contest, candidates must be Italian or foreigners resident in Italy. Each artist or collective can only submit one project. Artists who have already been selected in one of the last three editions of the call (ed. 2018, 2019, 2021) cannot participate.

“Possible is what the world has not yet expressed, but might at any moment. ... Reality is also what is not there but might be; what is invisible exists just as much as what is visible”.

In his last essay, Leonardo Caffo hints at “being young” as a status that allows not to be constrained by rules and conventions, thus being able to see one’s self and the surrounding world beyond predetermined roles and established destinies. This is a condition that exceeds chronological age: like Pascoli, Ghirri, Wenders, it is about the ability to see things not through a set definition, but by imagining an endless potential. Recent transformations of the photographic medium increase the possibilities of finding new ways to address complex themes and issues. As boundaries shift continuously, more room is made for underlying images to emerge and outline a new tale, a different story. Giorgio Parisi, a recent Nobel laureate for Physics, taught us how, in order to describe the complex systems that we inhabit nowadays, we need to start exactly from those elements that are different, that go beyond, that do not conform.

What winners receive

Fee of 1500 euros to the 7 selected finalists covering the expenses for:

• production and transport of the works;
• artists’ travel and stay in Reggio Emilia during the show’s preparation and inauguration;
• potential insurance covering the transport of works.

Luigi Ghirri Award, worth 4,000 euros, awarded to one of the finalists by an international jury, including a representative of the Ghirri family and chaired by the artistic direction of Fotografia Europea.

About Giovane Fotografia Italiana

Giovane Fotografia Italiana (Young Italian Photography) is a project born in 2012 and promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia. Since 2018, Giovane Fotografia Italiana provides for the awarding of a prize, which, starting from the 2022 and in collaboration with Luigi Ghirri's heirs, takes the name of Premio Luigi Ghirri. Thus enhancing the recognition of emerging talents of contemporary photography in Italy.

The project, curated by Ilaria Campioli and Daniele De Luigi, is in collaboration with GAI - Association for the Circuit of Young Italian Artists and with Fotografia Europea (European Photography), in partnership with Photoworks Festival in Brighton, Festival Panoràmic in Granollers, Barcelona, Fotofestiwal Łódź.

Through the network of partners, GFI aims at creating further opportunities of visibility for artists. The award is made possible thanks to the contribution of Reire srl. The project is co-financed by the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Department for Youth Policies, Servizio Civile Universale and ANCI.

Judging Criteria

GFI supports the work of artists who use the medium of photography as a reflection on its role in today's visual culture and on contemporary issues. Projects accepted are photographic series or ones in which, while sitting next to other medias, photography maintains a prominent role. The jury will assess the overall quality of the works, considering the role of images in their relation to the concept of the project , as well as the presentation of a proposal for an exhibition display.

Ilaria Campioli is the curator of the photographic section of Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia. She has worked for the Louvre Museum, for the Collezione Maramotti and for the Fotografia Europea festival for which she has curated several projects, some of them are devoted to photobooks. She has collaborated with Joan Fontcuberta, Erik Kessels and Sarah Moon following in particular the publishing production. Since 2018 she has been curator of the Giovane Fotografia Italiana Award. FAQs

1. What is the age required for entering the contest?

The contest is open to all of those artists who have not turned 36 years old by the 1st of December (submisssion deadline).

2. Is it possible for the same artist to apply simultaneously for the Giovane Fotografia Italiana and the European Photography Contest?

Yes it is possible and allowed to apply for both contests with the same project. Yet in case of the project being selected by the two juries , the artist will have to chose for which final he/ she wants to apply by the 12th of January.

3. Should Italian artists be resident in Italy to apply?

The Italian residency is only required for foreigners wanting to apply.

4. In which case is it necessary to upload a consent form?

The consent form must be presented only in case of pictures portraying recognizable people. Each recognizable subject has to fill in and sign the form which will be then uploaded by the artists. Photos taken in case of events (with more subjects portrayed) can be presented without a consent form contrarily to pictures portraying singular subjects.
