The award Emergentes 2020 - International Photography Award Encontros da Imagem is organised by Encontros da Imagem - International Photography and Visual Arts Festival aims to award the Best Portfolios in Contemporary Photography. This year because of the pandemic that we are going through, due to COVID-19, to keep compliant with the government guidelines - DGS and DGartes, and to make sure that everyone participating in the festival will be safe, the Board of Directors as decided that this year exceptionally the Portfolio Reviews that give photographers the opportunity to show their work to curators, gallery owners, publishers and museum and festival directors will take place online. The online reviews will take place on the week of the 14th to the 18th of September 2020 during this edition of the festival.
The Board of Directors taking into account the difficult situation that we are all going through, especially within the arts community has decided to give three monetary awards.
Encontros da Imagem, with more than thirty years of existence, is a non-profit cultural association that promotes annually an International Photography and Visual Arts Festival in the city of Braga, Portugal. The festival celebrates classic and contemporary photography and visual arts in general by showcasing emerging and established artists. Every year Encontros da Imagem promotes an open call for the Discovery Awards, where the winners have the opportunity to exhibit their work during the festival. Encontros da Imagem also organizes an International Photography Prize - Emergentes, this prize is awarded after the Portfolio Review, which gives photographers the opportunity to show their work to an international jury, composed by commissioners, gallery owners and expert editors, thus establishing solid foundations for the promotion of their work. The festival has developed an eclectic programme. This year the theme is “Genesis”, where numerous artists emerging and established, national and international will be shown in several public and private spaces (historical and monumental buildings, museums, galleries and others). Encontros da Imagem is a cultural photographic reference in Portugal, and has reached a prominent position in the international panorama, being currently one of the oldest photography festivals in Europe.
The selection process will be in two stages:
Biography with up to 1500 characters

CV with up to 2000 characters (or PDF file)
1 to 3 projects per submission
1 to 20 files per project

Alexa Becker - Acquisitions Editor, Kehrer Verlag
Alexa Becker is the Acquisitions Editor for photography and art books for Kehrer Verlag. Having obtained her Master's in Art History from the University of Heidelberg, she started her career at Kehrer in 2003, where she is responsible for selecting and acquiring new photography-related projects. Mrs. Becker serves at several international portfolio reviews as a reviewer and sits on a number of online juries.
Estefânia R. de Almeida - Gallery Owner Adorna Corações
Estefânia R. de Almeida is since 2003, Artistic Director of gallery Adorna Corações (Porto, Portugal), she I also a member of the MIP (Month of Image in Porto). She develops a pioneer work when it comes to the propagation of the contemporary photography practices in the Portuguese context. Her curatorial approach privileges an artistic view that differs from the more classic ways of image making, she works with multidisciplinary artist. The gallery Adorna Corações is looking to showcase not only stablished photographer but also new national and international emerging photographers.
Kate Edwards - Photo Editor, Guardian Weekend Magazine
Kate Edwards has been photo editor of the Guardian Weekend magazine for over 15 years. She has been a judge on a variety of photography awards, including World Press Photo, and been a reviewer at national and international photography festivals.
Marie Magnier - Associate Director Galeria Les Filles du Calvaire
After studying Art History with a specialization in Photography (Ecole du Louvre) and an experience in the Photography Department of the Museum of Modern Art of San Francisco (SFMOMA), Marie Magnier joined the Galerie Les filles du calvaire in 2000.
She now ensures its daily and artistic direction, in tandem with Charlotte Boudon.
The gallery is particularly recognized for its programming and its policy in favor of contemporary photography. It is considered one of the best French photo galleries.
It actively supports the work of around thirty artists, half of whom are photographers, and distributes more than sixty outdoor exhibitions annually. The gallery also contributes to the publication of numerous works. The selection is open to emerging artists, whose gallery is often the discoverer and to artists of intermediate career. Without this constituting a privileged axis, we will notice the important place taken by women within the artists of the gallery (more than half). The gallery collaborates with many institutions in France and abroad and is very well established in the network of dissemination of artist photographers.
Pablo Berastegui - Gallery Owner Salut Ao Monde!
Pablo Berástegui has been working for the past twenty years as a cultural producer in Spain, working in diferente cultural areas and with different public and private institutions. At this moment Berástegui is the director of the documental photography project Salut ao monde!, that started in February 2019 in Porto. Before this he was the director of PhotoEspaña in four editions (2003 - 2006). In 2016 he was also the director of European Capital of Culture in San Sebastián. He was also director of La noche en blanco de Madrid in four editions (2007 -- 2010) and responsible for city cultural centers like Matadero Madrid (2008-2012) o Centro Conde Duque (2013).
Paul di Felice - Art Critic & Independent Curator
He lives and works in Luxembourg and Venice. Doctor in Arts, he teaches modern and contemporary art history as well as artistic pedagogy at the University of Luxembourg. Since the 1970s, he has pursued his artistic activities as an artist, art critic and curator of international exhibitions of contemporary photography. He is a member of the association of art critics AICA Luxembourg and President of the European Month of Photography network. Since 1984, he has been co-editor and co-director of Café Crème édition&médiation and a member of the editorial staff of lacritique.org magazine. Since 2006, he is co-director of European Month of Photography in Luxembourg. He is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mudam (Musée d'art moderne Grand Duc Jean, Luxembourg) and Vice-President of Lët'zArles, an association who collaborates with Les Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles.
Curator since 2003 of the corporate collection Arendt Art, he is also member of the board of IACCCA, the International Association of Corporate Collections of Contemporay Art.
Paulo Nunes - Gallery Owner Paulo Nunes Arte Contemporânea
Paulo Nunes was born in Germany and spent is youth between Portugal and Brasil.
Paulo opened is first gallery in 2001 in Vila France de Xira, Portugal and his second and current one Galeria Paulo Nunes Arte Contemporânea in the same city in 2010. He represents Portuguese and international artists currently from Mozambique, São Tome and Principe, Brazil, Spain and Iran, from different artistic backgrounds. He has been part of various international air fairs, in Spain, Italy, Germany and Austria.
He is interested in artists that explore ideias connected with their legacy, homeland, culture, genre, spirituality and themselves.
Peter Bonnell - Senior Curator at QUAD & Curator at FORMAT International Photography Festival
Peter Bonnell is Senior Curator at QUAD in Derby. He has been a professional Curator for 16 years, and prior to that a practising visual artist. Peter has been at QUAD since 2012 where he has worked on a range of projects, including the mass participation film Derby Soap Opera by Marinella Senatore involving almost 15,000 Derby Residents. Group exhibitions include: Illuminated; and The Pride and the Passion: Contemporary Art, Football and The Derby County Collection. He has been a member of the team for FORMAT International Photography Festivals 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, and has also represented FORMAT as part of the PARALLEL European Photography Platform. Peter has curated numerous exhibitions, written for a number of journals, as well as artist catalogues and edited over 25 publications.
Tristan Lund - Art advisor specialising in photography & Curator of the Collection The Incite Project
Tristan Lund is an independent art advisor specialising in photography.
He is curator of The Incite Project, a UK based collection of photojournalism, documentary photography and photographic art and from 2017 - 2019 he was the curator of Photo London art fair's Discovery section dedicated to young galleries. He is a trusted advisor to private collectors of photography internationally, sourcing works from artists, galleries and auction houses and navigating the art market on their behalf, both in buying and selling. With experience in the field of vintage photography he is a member of the Frieze Masters vetting committee and as the Director of Michael Hoppen Contemporary from 2010-2014 he is in a position to advise and support emerging and established photographic artists.
Elina Heikka is Museum Director at The Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki since 2007. The Museum, founded in 1969, is the national special museum for photography and puts on exhibitions of Finnish and foreign contemporary photography, and presents the diverse history of photography (www.valokuvataiteenmuseo.fi). Elina Heikka holds MA in art history. She was editor and editor-in-chief in Valokuva – Finnish Photography magazine from 1994 to1998. After that she worked as a researcher at the Finnish Museum of Photography and as a special researcher at the National Gallery / Central Art Archives from 2001 to 2007. She has published widely on contemporary photography, history of Finnish photography, contemporary art and visual culture.
Helen Starr is an Afro-Carib Trinidadian who lives between Trinidad and the UK. She has worked in the Arts sector for over 25 years. She founded The Mechatronic Library in 2010, to enable artists to engage with new media tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual reality (VR), Game engines, and 3D printing technologies. Starr’s focus is on the wellbeing of local communities. Working with museum curators and education teams, Starr’s hope is that cutting edge artworks can provide a glimpse of a future filled with hope.
Sunil Shah is an artist, curator and writer based in Oxford, UK. He is Associate Editor of American Suburb X online photography and visual culture platform and Associate Lecturer at University of the Arts, London. Specific areas of focus and research are global art, the postcolonial condition, photography and archives.
