About

Copenhagen Photo Festival is the biggest photo festival in Scandinavia and takes places in June every year. The festival presents around 60 exhibitions in collaboration with approximately 50 different museums, galleries and other venues in Copenhagen and southern Sweden. During these 11 days Copenhagen Photo Festival also offers artist talks, seminars and workshops, and every year 250 photographers and visual artists participate in the festival’s programme. Photo City consists of both exhibitions based on an open call and invited exhibitors. As part of Photo City you will receive international exposure in print, in person and online, as well as a chance to connect with the photography industry. Last year Copenhagen Photo Festival had almost 55.000 visitors from home and abroad.

Photo City

This open call is for photographers and artists who wish to contribute with an exhibition project to be exhibited at the heart of the festival, Photo City, which is open during the whole festival. Copenhagen Photo Festival takes place June 6-16 2019, and Photo City is located at Refshaleøen. This part of Copenhagen has in the past few years undergone huge changes, from housing the shipyard B&W to hosting art venues, theaters, restaurants and other cultural events. Tourists from all over the world is drawn to Refshaleøens food market, gourmet restaurants and contemporary art centre, Copenhagen Contemporary. For more information about Refshaleøen, check www.refshaleoen.dk.

Your contribution must be of a whole exhibition concept (either as a solo or a group show) that matches one of the festival’s main themes. Copenhagen Photo Festival categorizes its exhibitions according to three main themes: Framing Society, Framing Vision and Framing Identity. You must be able to define, which of these categories, you see your project as being part of.

  • Framing Society: Exhibitions concerned with society. Politics, ideology and culture.
  • Framing Vision: Exhibitions based on the media. Aesthetique, technique and media.
  • Framing Identity: Exhibitions where the individual is in focus. Subject, existence and identity.

It’s important that the project submitted has never previously been exhibited in Denmark. Please notice that Photo City consists of both indoor and outdoor exhibitions. In our our gallery, you can see examples from last year’s exhibitions.

What exhibitors receive

As an exhibitor in Photo City at Copenhagen Photo Festival, you receive:

  • A free exhibition space in the heart of Scandinavia’s largest photo festival.
  • A targeted PR- and marketing strategy for your exhibition on Copenhagen Photo Festival’s social platforms and in the festival’s printed material.
  • A chance to meet other exhibitors, curators and juror members at the festival’s meet n’ greet, which is a unique opportunity to become part of a community and expand your network, not only within Denmark, but also to the rest of the world.
  • An invitation to take part in the festival as well as an invitation to be part of a programme together with other exhibitors that will run from June 5-9.
  • Guidance by Copenhagen Photo Festival’s curators and exhibition builders.

Copenhagen Photo Festival encourage exhibitors to consider themselves ambassadors for the festival. This includes being invited to participate in the promotion of the festival through a number of activities, such as taking part in a video or a podcast in relation to the festival or to offer an artist talk during the festival. We also expect that the exhibitors in Photo City will help communicate news about the festival through their own network, for example on social media. This can be done through sharing news about the opening or activities related to specific exhibitions etc.

Juror information
