One grand prize winner will be awarded the Charcoal Publishing Prize. The winning project will be published and distributed worldwide by Charcoal Book Club, the subscription service for photobooks.
This year, all selected, participating attendees will have a selection of their work published and distributed in an opus catalog by Charcoal Book Club.
With the continued uncertainty for travel and gatherings in March, the 2021 Chico Review has been restructured into a 2-week online, intensive masterclass.
Sixty-four applicants will be selected by our jury and invited to participate with twenty-five of the most influential and creative photographers, book makers, gallerists, museum curators, and photobook publishers in the industry. One full scholarship and five partial scholarships will be awarded. Student discounts will be available to those selected who qualify.
Participating artists receive ten formal online portfolio reviews by speakers and reviewers over a two week period and take part in artist lectures, panel discussions, and peer reviews. At the end of the event, one grand prize winner will be announced and their project will be published and distributed as a monograph by Charcoal Book Club.
1 Charcoal Publishing Prize - The Charcoal Publishing Prize will be awarded to one of the selected artists in attendance. This project will be published and distributed worldwide by Charcoal Book Club in 2020.
6 Merit Scholarships - One full tuition scholarship ($1875) and five partial tuition scholarships ($650) to the Chico Portfolio Review will be awarded to photographers chosen by the jury based on the quality of their submitted project.
64 Selected Artists - Sixty-four total photographers will be invited to take part in this juried online portfolio review and masterclass. These attendees are chosen by our jury based on the merit of their submitted project.
All participating attendees will have a selection of their work published and distributed in an opus catalog by Charcoal Book Club.

What to expect if selected to attend:
In order to accommodate as many time zones and schedules as possible, our presentations and panel discussions will be pre-recorded and available to watch at your leisure during the review period. We will solicit questions for the panels in advance of recording. For reviews, attendees will be sent either a Zoom link or Skype number and directions on how to join each review. Each reviewer will have access to a dropbox folder with your work one month before you meet so they can familiarize themselves with your work.images if needed.
